About the Department

Established in 1971, the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care, located within the School of Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center , serves the Medical School as the academic home of the social, behavioral, and public health sciences. The department and its seven divisions consist of 24 full and part-time faculty , over 150 adjunct faculty with clinical or teaching appointments, 21 research assistants and associates, and 10 administrative support staff members.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to provide education, research and service, especially in relation to epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, health social sciences, medical humanities, health law, ethics and history of medicine. The Department’s teaching activities and research programs have four interrelated goals:

Our Offices

Community Medicine & Health Care's offices are located at the Exchange office complex. The Exchange, a unique 3 story, wood post and beam structure consisting of four interconnected office buildings is situated in a wooded northeast section of Farmington along Farmington Avenue (Route 4) approximately, one mile from the Route 4 exit of Interstate 84 and directly across the street from the University of Connecticut Health Center campus and John Dempsey Hospital. The Department's main office, the majority of its Divisions, and most faculty and staff offices are located in Building Four, Suite 260. The physical infrastructure of the Department consists of 12,798 square feet of offices and open space.  The suite includes 19 faculty offices, as well as office and open floor plan space for research assistants and administrative staff.  Space is also allocated for document storage, a computer laboratory, a shared office for postdoctoral fellows, as well as significant amounts of space designated to store personnel, project and grant files.  Additionally, the Department encompasses a large classroom or conference room that can be used for seminars, departmental meetings and other functions, two smaller conference rooms, and a kitchen.  These facilities are available to other Departments by reservation.

Conference and Meeting Rooms

Within the Department's main suite are two conference rooms and one smaller meeting room which are used by department members for meetings and appointments. All conference and meeting rooms are equipped with wired data ports to the Health Center's computer network. The large conference includes audiovisual equipment (a laptop and LCD projector is available upon request). The smaller conference room seats 12 and is equipped with a telephone connection to facilitate conference calls. The meeting room accommodates 4-6 people and is available on a first-come, first served basis. Department members can reserve the two conference rooms electronically through Microsoft® Outlook's resource scheduling capabilities.

Computer Laboratory

The Department of Community Medicine and Health Care maintains a 10 Pentium PC computer laboratory in its offices at the Exchange. The computers are outfitted with the latest statistical and research software including SPSS and SAS as well as the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Scanners, color printers, and Internet access are also available for research and educational activities. The computer lab may be used by departmental faculty and staff and MPH students. Users must have a Health Center login to access the UCHC computer network. The lab is open during regular business hours, 8:30 AM - 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
