Senior Vice President for Medical Policy and Programs at Aetna Health Plans (1986-1995); Chair, Department of Health Administration and Policy, Columbia University School of Public Health (1982-1986); Head of Behavioral Sciences and Community Health, University of Connecticut Health Center (1967-1982), Director, University of Connecticut Health Center Health Policy & Primary Care Research Center (1996-2005). Dr. Bailit has published widely on health policy and managed care and serves on many national committees and editorial boards. He has been of member of the (External) Institute of Medicine , National Academy of Sciences since 1984.

Research Interests

Dr. Bailit's research interests include the development and evaluation of delivery system innovations for underserved populations and community-based dental education programs.

Current Grants

Pipeline, Profession & Practice: Community-Based Dental Education

This six year project is a national demonstration program designed to reduce disparities in access to dental care. The 15 participating dental schools are recruiting more underrepresented and low-income students, having senior students and resdients spend an average of 60 days in patient-centered community clinics providing care to underserved patients, and preparing students to care for a diverse group of patients.

Pipeline, Profession & Practice: Community-Based Dental Education - The California Initiative

The Endowment is supporting the participation of all five California dental schools in the Pipeline, Profession and Practice program.

New Dental Education Models

This three year project is assessing the financial and political feasibility of new models of dental education. Dental schools are under increasing financial pressure and need to look a new educational models that will provide them the resources needed to meet their educational, research, and service missions.
