After earning her doctorate in public health and completing a postdoctoral fellowship in mental health research at Rutgers University, Dr. Jane Ungemack began working in 1994 as a Visiting Assistant Professor and then Assistant professor in Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. In 1997, she transfered her appointment to the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care.
The majority of Dr. Ungemack's research has been conducted in collaboration with and in support of the Connecticut Departments of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and Children and Families (DCF). She has conducted numerous statewide substance abuse treatment and prevention needs assessment studies used to support state program and policy development, including adult household surveys, student surveys, studies of at-risk youth, social indicators analyses and community resource assessments. In addition to her research projects, Dr. Ungemack teaches courses in the Graduate Program in Public Health.

Dr. Ungemack co-teaches the core course Public Health Research Methods with Dr. Schensul, advises Masters of Public Health Students and supervises independent research projects in the Graduate Program in Public Health. She has also taught Psychiatric Epidemiology with Dr. Babor.
Dr. Ungemack is a health services researcher with a specialty focus in substance abuse treatment and prevention. She consults for the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) regarding substance abuse needs assessment and outcomes monitoring issues and the Department of Children and Families on adolescent substance abuse treatment. She is involved in research in assessing the effectiveness of treatment for adult and adolescent substance abusers, as well as the transfer of adolescent evidence-based treatment models to community practice.
The purpose of this project is to enhance the substance abuse treatment delivery system for youth in Hartford by creating a network of providers with training in a continuum of exemplary treatment models and by implementing a community-based outreach system to increase referrals and linkages to treatment. Funded by the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment through the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.
An evaluation of screening and brief interventions in hospital emergency department and federally qualified health center sites in New Haven, Connecticut. Funded by SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment through the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
To evaluate a comprehensive and unified statewide Strategic Plan for delivering and implementing effective substance abuse prevention and/or mental health promotion services in Connecticut. Funded by SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention through the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services
To evaluate the expansion of culturally appropriate drug prevention and intervention services for users of ecstasy and other club drugs. Funded by SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention through the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
To evaluate a comprehensive strategy for implementing evidence-based prevention/early intervention programs that reduce the progression of substance use among young adults, college settings. Funded by SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention through the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
The purpose of this project is to enhance the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services substance abuse treatment data collection, processing and reporting capability. Funded by SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment through the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
